				Setup and Installation Barriers
The intent of this group is to define Setup and Installation barriers, and
problem areas of computer and information technology as it relates to people
with accessibility needs. ".
The following are definitions of each of the headings.
Physical barriers: barriers that require physical dexterity, visual, or
audible actions to perform an action.
Logical barriers: barriers that are non-physical in nature.
Solution: possible solutions to allow accessibility.
Integration: A concept or technology that would support "hooks" from a
commercial device or software program to a current and available assistive
technology.
Standard: A guideline that will allow technology to create an acceptable
accessible solution.

1. Telephones:
Physical Barriers -
Loading the cell phone battery
remove packaging
label cables
not compatible with TTY
can not identify PBX button layout
not able to identify cable connections
be able to complete registration/warranty information

Logical barriers -
pre installation instructions
identify a wrong number entered
Switchboard needs proprietary software
Setting up voice mail, speed dial

Solution -
battery: open battery compartment with one finger/hand
tactile land marks for battery + - , or keyed
              insert battery with one hand/finger
              tactile landmarks for keys
remove packaging: be able to do with one hand

Integration issues -:
TTY compatible (sending and receiving communication)
volume control

2. Computers (palm top, workstation, laptop, mainframe):
Physical barrier -
Identify state of power switch
location of power switch
Be able to remove from packaging
audio power up/ready
identify cable connections
identify diskette label
lift computer from floor
identify CD-ROM label
insert/remove diskette
identify port/feature icons
open CD ROM case
removable floppy/CD ROM
clean mouse ball

Logical barrier -
registration paperwork
be able determine if boot process fails
Identify serial number
Screen reader accessible in WINDOWS safe mode
Identify CD-ROM key number
virus check
pre installation instructions
identify when system lock up
Be able to access speech at the BIOS configuration level

Laptops
Be able to open laptop cover
Be able identify battery life
keyboard layouts are inconsistent
key spacing is inconsistent
install/remove battery
remove PCMCIA cards
Non standard device drivers
Be able to disable the mouse with out going into CMOS

Mainframe
Allow hardware configuration console accessible

Solutions -
switches - be able to tell state of switch (on/off), clear access to switch
(knuckle rule) audio, tactile, visual
mouse - disable mouse, without limitation to functionality
labeling - tactile, make room on the device for self sticking label to
identify port
documentation - text accessible electronic format available upon request,
phone support availability (plus TTY), text e-mail response
open case - open with one hand/finger

Strategic keys - nibs ON tactile landmark function/feature keys e.g. F, J,
F4, F8, F12, Fn

Removing external media - use with one finger/hand

Identifying of serial numbers - phone support to get number from them,
postpone registering of serial number until after installation, drop a
registration slip into mail with warranty

Laptop - consistent keyboard layout, strategic spacing and marking key keys
for tactile identification

Integration issues -
Video card compatible with screen readers and magnifier
configuration settings for compatible keyboard emulators
Flash ROM to perform updated chip programming

3. Software:
Physical barriers -

Logical barriers -
inaccessible documentation
installation tools do not have built in accessibility (needs screen reader
already loaded)
tech support needs to know how to use keyboard compatible keys instead of
the mouse
troubleshooting during installation is not accessible
define status of installation progress

Solutions:
CMOS - utility to identify CMOS settings while the operating system is
already up.
ROM accessibility for voice response (speech runs when video runs)
        Status of installation: text equivalent
Trouble shooting - error messages done in text format

Integration issues -
Standard Microsoft escape codes

4. Printers:
Physical barrier -
external packaging
paper jam
internal packaging
pull toner plastic strip
identify if no ink prints on paper
load paper
load ribbons
identify inkjet cartridge color designation
install bands on mainframe printers
status of buttons and switches

logical barriers -
pre installation documentation not accessible
printer firmware is not accessible
Led error message

Solutions -
- removal of toner plastic with one hand to fingers.
- toner, color cartridges need room to place tactile markings
- load into printer with one hand
- paper jam removal by one hand
- error messages, audio (voice), visual

5. Faxes:
Physical barriers -
identify phone and line plugs

logical barriers -
pre installation documentation
speed dial setup
other configuration options
LED error message identification
Capable of loading paper

Solution:
tactile sense of where line and phone lines get placed

6. Peripheral Data Storage:
Physical barrier -
dexterity needed to install
labeling of buttons/switches
dexterity needed to use media

logical barriers -
invalid media error message
identifying labeling on media
pre installation instructions

solution -
one hand/ two finger loading
visually define top/bottom front/back of media
error message same as above

7. Copier
Physical barriers -
external/internal packaging
identify status of keys/buttons

logical barriers -
pre installation instructions
identify led error message
identification of buttons/switches
placement of copier for complete access
loading paper accessible
ability to use buttons/switches

Solutions:
same as above

8. Pager:
Physical barriers -
Battery installation
Button access

Logical barriers -
LCD setup configuration

Solution:
Same as above

10. Other:
Audio Visual equipment
VCR
Scanner
